For us non-Mac users, today is an eventful day. Windows 7 is being released. I pre-ordered my copy a few months ago to take advantage of a huge discount on this operating system upgrade. A huge task looms before This Digital Mom. In a word. BACKUP!
Like Santa, I will be checking my list twice and my backups (three times) to make sure everything is backed up before I make the migration from Windows XP (yes I skipped the whole Vista disaster) to Windows 7.
Here are the steps This Digital Mom will be taking before upgrading to Windows 7:
1 I will make sure that all the metadata files are saved in my Lightroom Catalogs. This Digital Mom would not want to lose all her hard work getting those photos just right for clients.
2. I will doing an archiving of photos I do not need at this time onto discs.
3. I will also archive any videos recently created to DVD’s as well.
4. I will then backup my photos and video files to their respective homes online.
5. I will backup all of my blog files as well. Would not want to lose all your valuable comments, now would I?
6. I will de-clutter and de-junk my computer of any unwanted or unnecessary files.
7. I will then defrag my hard drive to make sure it is optimized for the upgrade.
8. Now that my hard drive is cleaned up, time to back that up as well.
9. I will download and run the Windows Upgrade Advisor. This little app will alert me to any potential problems I could face during the Upgrade. And looks like I have a few issues to address. Good to know ahead of time so that maybe they won’t be an issue.
10. Now would be a good time to deal with those driver issues. I will go to their websites and see if there are updates that I can download.
11. I will make sure that my backup bootup disc is current, just in case. You just never know when you will need it.
12. I have read that it is a good idea to disable ones anti-virus, spyware and malware programs before upgrading to Windows 7.
13. Lastly, get me a Venti Iced White Chocolate Mocha with an add shot from Starbucks to keep me energized for this upgrade. I understand, and it was confirmed by the Windows Update Advisor, that I will need to do a custom upgraded since I am still using Windows XP.
This concludes my Must Do’s before I upgrade to Windows 7 on this Thursday Thirteen Blog Hop. But before you go on to the next stop, please take a moment to complete this brief survey.
