Last night as I was in the kitchen cleaning up dinner, hubby went outside to let our dog Snapple roam for a few minutes while he polluted the air.  Before he could get all the way out the garage door, he comes back in to tell me that the moon is orange right now and just coming up over the horizon.

So I investigate as to whether this was a good photographic moment.  I say the moon and immediate grabbed my camera and tripod and headed outside.  Got all my settings just right for night photography, set the timer and pressed the shutter button.  Wouldn’t you know it, a car turned down our street and passed right in front of me.  I muttered a few pleasantries thinking that this shot would be ruined but the car.  But then I got a glimpse of the resulting image before it disappeared.  I loved it immediately.  Took a few more before packing up and coming inside.

I couldn’t wait to download these photographs from my computer and see what I had captured.  Believe it or not, the image above is the very first photograph I snapped with the car passing through.  The streaks of light from the car just adds to the overall effect of this moonlight captured image.

In the past I have generally shied away from night photography because of getting the exposure just right as well as the timing.  Now that I am actually trying it and practicing it, I am really enjoying capturing these photographs.  It just so happens that there is a major meteor show occurring in the skies on August 12th.  I am definitely planning on making a trip that night to Joshua Tree National Park where I will be away from the city and light pollution.  Stayed tuned for next Friday’s Sky Watch posting.

For those interested in the technical details of this photograph, I shot this photograph in RAW format.  My camera settings were:  ISO 400, 55mm, 8 sec at f11 using my 18-55mm lens (with Image Stabilization turned off) on a tripod.

So now that you have viewed my Sky Watch photograph, I invite you to click on over to the home of Sky Watch Friday and check out the other amazing photographs submitted by many talented photographers. AG00090_
