The memory of my first truck is still fresh in my mind.  I got my first Toyota truck Christmas 1989.  Guess you could call it a Christmas present to myself.  I couldn’t wait to drive it.  But wait I did since I had purchased a stick shift and didn’t even know how to drive a manual transmission so my dad had to drive it off the lot for me.  By the end of the weekend, I had taught myself to drive my truck.  Quite a feeling of accomplishment!

This weekend hubby and I have been working on our current truck, a Toyota 4Runner.  We have two of them actually.  Both 1995 red 4Runners.  Our original one crapped out on us in 2007 {blown heads}.  We figured eventually when we had the time and money we would fix it up again.  Earlier this year a good friend of mine offered to sell me their 1995 red 4Runner for the price of towing it from Palm Springs to Yucca Valley.  Sold!

They were parting with it because it had overheated on them and their “mechanic” told them it was a blown head gasket and was going to charge them almost $3000 to fix it.  They opted to go out and buy a new vehicle and we got the broken down one.  We were to repair the overheating issue simply by installing a new thermostat for less than $20 had we had to purchase the part.  In reality all we had to do was take it off our old 4Runner.

The new 4Runner also had a broken speedometer.  They had never fixed it because it was going to cost $700 so they opted to buy a $200 GPS unit instead.  This weekend hubby and I removed the dash components from both vehicles and replaced the parts.  Its pretty cool having two identical vehicles to pick your own parts and fix one vehicle.

Since we had the dash in pieces, it was the perfect time to give it a thorough cleaning.  I swear the newer 4Runner looks almost brand new now.  Soon she will be road worthy and worthy of taking a photograph of.  So today on this Monochrome Monday, I offer a vintage photograph of my younger carefree childless days and my first Toyota.
