Be afraid! Be very afraid! If ever you come upon Cholla Cactus, you will not want to walk close by. It has a nickname of the “jumping cactus”. The prickly pears on this cactus will jump onto you should you walk nearby. Even when they are lying discarded on the ground.
And God forbid you should step or land on them. If you do, proceed directly to an emergency room for removal and more importantly, Pain Medication! Once these needles get embedded into your skin, they will have to be pulled from your body with pliers.
While living in the desert, I have discovered one creature who is immune to the Cholla Cactus. Desert chipmunks. If I had not seen it with my own eyes I would have never believed that these creatures will climb into the cactus and feast. They prance around like they are wearing steal toed shoes in the cactus. I wish I still had the video I recorded one day of multiple chipmunks gorging themselves, but alas the video was lost when my hard drive crashed a few years back.
