Oh how I would love to be art journaling beside Duran Duran right now.
Ever heard of The Fab Five? Duran Duran gained that nick name after they developed a fan following (known as duranies) much like The Beetle’s did during the 1960s. I have been a “duranie” of Duran Duran since first seeing them on MTV in 1981 (back when MTV actually played nothing but music videos.) I could easily go on about all my teenage memories of my favorite band (posters wallpapered on every available surface in my bedroom, spending my allowance at the local import record story buying every single record I could get my hands on, the devastation I felt when one of my former best friend’s decided to take her brother instead of me to our first Duran Duran concert in 1983 just an hour before we were supposed to leave, to taking an early lunch break at 9am to get tickets to a private concert at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles in ‘89 and then getting squished against the stage for two hours with John Taylor right in front of me for two hours).
The days of recording their songs on cassette tape from the radio (until I could afford to buy their albums) and dressing like Roger Taylor (yes I had the haircut and the shoes, at least) are long behind me now. Or so I thought. Back in 2012 I learned that Duran Duran was going to be in concert nearby, I purchased two tickets to see them at the Orange County Fairgrounds as my Mother’s Day gift to myself. I knew my husband was not into Duran Duran so I asked my daughter if she wanted to go. My daughter and I had such a blast at this concert. I think my daughter thoroughly enjoyed seeing me act like a teenager after being her mom for the past 19 years. This was probably one of the best Mother Daughter weekends ever.
And then yesterday when Tangie released the newest journaling prompt for our 2014 Art Journal Caravan, I was swept back to my teenage years when she mentioned Duran Duran (I’m sure she was a duranie much like myself though she never mentioned it.) I got very excited too because I knew exactly which musical influence I was going to journal about. Duran Duran, of course. And one of the first things that came to mind was the artwork for their second album Rio by Patrick Nagel. My design kind of took off from there as I decided to incorporate a few images from the Mother Daughter Weekend as well.
Now I want to know…Who was or is your all time favorite musical group?
