For the past several months I have been tinkering with various recipes by using organic healthier ingredients. My most recent creation is Homemade Chocolate Syrup.

My son loves making chocolate milk. But once I started getting to research all the ingredients in commercially produced chocolate syrup, I realized that this was not good for you at all. I also use chocolate syrup in my homemade coffee creamers recipes (which you can find here.)

Another concern for me and my family is diabetes, as it runs strong in my family as well as in my husband’s family. This does not bode well for our children. I would rather prevent this disease from ever happening, if possible. Thanks to the help of a close friend, who has been a food controlled diabetic for over 20 years, I am learning more about the disease and how to feed our bodies healthy foods to prevent diabetes as well as other diseases. She recently told me about the benefits of using Organic Coconut Sugar Crystals in place of regular sugar. Since coconut sugar is low glycemic, the body absorbs its sugars slowly and has time to burn them off, preventing the “blood sugar spikes” we associate with sweet foods. Coconut sugar is merely the dehydrated, crystallized sap of the coconut palm flower, unrefined and naturally high in ancillary nutrients.

Another thing she has taught me is how diabetics should steer clear of sugary foods before noon. But coffee can sometimes be the downfall for many diabetics when they utilize commercially processed coffee creamers to flavor their morning cup of “get up and go”!

That’s one reason I started making my own coffee creamers, because of all the unnecessary ingredients if coffee creamers. And now I am working on making my homemade coffee creamers even better.

The first place I had to start was with one of the more flavorful ingredients of my recipes. chocolate syrup! It’s loaded with sugar to give it it’s sweet appeal. So I scoured the Internet looking for a recipe for chocolate syrup I could modify for my needs.

Guess what?

You can make your own chocolate syrup with five simple ingredients. Five! Versus the 12 or more ingredients listed on the packaging for commercially produced products.

So earlier this week I went to work in my kitchen making my own chocolate syrup using the Organic Coconut Sugar Crystals I had recently purchased.  It was pretty easy to make.

chocolate-syrup-dry-ingredients First I mixed all the dry ingredients (raw cacao powder, sea salt, coconut sugar)  into a saucepan and whisked them till well blended and lump free.  Then I added water and turned the stovetop on to a medium heat.

Stirring constantly so it doesn’t burn.  Brought to a boil.  A word of caution though.   Just don’t leave the saucepan unattended (to post on Facebook what your doing) or this could happen.  Yikes!  What a mess!

And as is the right of every cook, you get the first taste test.  Definitely different but just as tasty.  But the real test was going to see if it would pass the taste buds of my son picky palette.  It passed with flying colors.  He drank up the glass of chocolate milk lickty split.  And I was rewarded with  “Mom of the Year” status in my son’s eyes.  Could I ask for more?

So if you would like to reach the status of “Mom of the Year” I suggest you download this recipe card and make some chocolate syrup for your family.
