I remember this day so vividly. I came home from work to the news that fellow high school classmate, Roy Brown had been killed in action during the US Invasion of Panama in 1989. As we gathered for his funeral, we never envisioned this type of high school reunion so soon after graduation. Can’t believe it’s been nearly 23 years now.
I remember Roy as a quiet person who avoided the camera but one that loved music. In fact, he was a “Brass” man in our school marching band. As I recall, we had a pretty kick ass band that year. Many awards were handed to Magnolia High School during the Tournament season. I used to see Roy on the weekends as well at Knott’s Berry Farm. Yep, we used to hangout at the local amusement park in the dance clubs and then ride the roller coasters when we needed some fresh air and a few moments to rest our dancing legs. Roy also used to work at Knott’s Berry Farm.
Though I’ve had several family members and friends who have served in the military, Roy is the only one I knew who was killed in action. While I won’t be driving west to Orange County this Memorial Day, I did want to take a few moments to remember what this holiday is all about and to say a prayer for all the families who have lost loved ones and to remember those who paid the ultimate price for freedom.
Here’s just a few of the articles I clipped and saved from the local Orange County Newspapers many years ago.
