The second of four blood moons made it’s appearance over Joshua Tree National Park (despite clouds rolling in from Hurricane Simon) in the wee hours this morning.  The first blood moon happened back in April. And the next two blood moons will grace the skies in 2015 (April and September).

After watching my primetime shows last night (priorities first) I grabbed my gear and ventured alone into Joshua Tree National Park to witness the latest blood moon and to try my skills at photographing it once again. It was just me, the joshua trees, several rocks, and countless unknown critters enjoying this fall night in the desert. Oh and the minions! Can’t forget the minions. To kill time while my camera and intervalmoeter did most of the work, I relaxed in my chair while playing Minion Rush on my iPad. Occasionally I would stare longingly up into the night sky and admire the millions of stars and planets that came out as the light of the moon diminished.

But you didn’t come here to read about the ramblings from this sleepless photographer.  You came here for the pictures.  So this is for all my family and friends who silently slumbered in their comfortable beds while us night owls ventured outside to witness the lunar eclipse.

Did you sleep through this lunar eclipse or were you able to witness the blood moon with your own eyes (or camera)?
