Cyclamen
Meet the newest addition to my family of house plants. I was drawn to the unusualness of this particular flower. You see, the stem grows down while the flower petals are reflexed back up.
When I started to set up for this shoot, it was still raining outside. I placed the plant on a table next to a north facing window and was going to use one of my lights to light it from the south. Turns out I didn’t need to. The sun broke through the clouds and started streaming in my west facing slider.
A little water from a spray bottle and this house plant was ready for the camera.
A little info about the Cyclamen – there are apparently 23 different species of this plant. This house plant will go dormant on me in a few months, shrivel up and then start producing beautiful flowers again in September. We’ll just have to see how it survives summer in the desert! It prefers Mediterranean soils such as those found in Spain. I will have to ask my friend Mike CJ about it next time he’s on Twitter. And upon further reading on on Wikipedia, it is also the national flower of Israel. I think I’ll have to send my friend Robin an email of this photo.
